Central California Labrador Retriever Rescue (CCLRR) was "born" in July 1998 due to the great need to find loving homes for abused, abandoned or unwanted Labrador Retrievers in the Central Valley. We are an all-volunteer organization.  Our dogs are in foster homes or with their current families; we do not have a central facility or shelter. We adopt to homes north to Redding and south to Fresno, and from the S.F. Bay Area south to Monterey County.

Fighting To Save Charlie

Charlies Journey 5-11-26 (4).jpg
Charlie 05-09-26 (5).jpg

Hello Lab lovers! As many of you know, it was truly a team effort yesterday, (5/8/26) but we were able to secure sweet Charlie from the shelter where he would have been euthanized due to there being no medical resources available to help him over the weekend.

Charlie was picked up by Animal Control a few days ago after it was believed he was hit by a car. He was found laying in the grass, clearly unwell, unable to get up, walk, eat, or drink on his own. When staff tried to stand him up, he walked in circles and he was fed by syringe.

Fast forward to last night, our amazing foster met him at the ER last night and we honestly didn’t know what today would bring. Charlie was minimally responsive, and the next recommended step was an expensive MRI or make a tough decision. While he showed some interest in food, he couldn’t quite make all the pieces work to actually eat.

We decided to try medications to help with vertigo, pain, and nausea, then send him home with the most loving foster family to see what the next 24 hours would bring. (see video)

This morning, Charlie ate some turkey meatballs and drank broth. A few hours later, he wanted to meet the other dogs. A few hours after that… he got up on his own, followed the other dogs around and drank water from a bowl on his own.

While we are thrilled with his progress, which is such a testament to being in a home and safe, he is not out of the woods yet. Charlie still very obviously has neurological symptoms happening. He has to turn right when changing direction and his gait is still off, but we are cautiously optimistic. We will continue forward with a neurology consult and possibly an MRI depending on how he progresses.

We are incredibly grateful for this amazing community. Whether you’ve donated, shared his story, offered support, or simply sent well wishes — thank you. It’s because of you that we’re able to continue helping dogs heal, recover, and eventually find the forever homes they deserve.

As long as this sweet boy keeps fighting, we'll keep fighting for him, but we need your help. As we move toward a neurology consult and potentially an MRI (estimated around $7,000 due to the need for sedation), we appreciate your continued support more than we can say. LATEST UPDATE 5/21/26
Charlie had a great day yesterday! 💙 He went for his neurology appointment at UC Davis which concluded that he is improving beautifully and truly quite miraculously. The most likely conclusion at this time and with the information we have is that this was a head trauma event - like being hit by a vehicle - and he is doing a great job recovering. It’s the best possible news at this time. We will be keeping him in rescue at least another 4 weeks at which time he will be neutered and prepped for adoption assuming he continues to improve and remains stable. Those interested in adopting should know that there is a chance he’ll always have a couple minor deficits or maybe he’ll continue to improve with time. Right now, the deficits are minor (left side effected, can be wobbly sometimes and prefers to circle to the right). We will be slowly introducing him to more activity, begin weaning him off meds and working on some manners with the hope the improvement keeps trending forward the way it has. To all those sending well-wishes and donations - Charlie thanks you! Because of you, we are able to take dogs like Charlie and give them a true second chance at life. We are so grateful!
